A lecture in English indicates that the Islamic shariah is the code of law for the Islamic way of life which Allah, the Almighty, revealed and commanded mankind to follow. The Quran is the main basis of shariah. It states the principles while the Prophet's tradition provides details of their application. For example, the Quran says, "... establish prayer and pay zakah ..." but it does not describe how to do these things, unlike the Prophet's tradition which gives us the details.
